 Penafiel is conveniently located in the North, it’s only 30 minutes from OPO (Francisco Sá Carneiro, Porto international airport) and our favorite city, Porto! And 40 minutes east is the beautiful Douro River Valley, which we highly recommend visiting.

LIS (Humberto Delgado, Lisbon international airport) is a 3-hour drive from Penafiel. Although further south, LIS offers more flight options from the US and there are also many wonderful places between Lisbon and the North worth visiting such as Sintra, Cascais, Óbidos, Nazare, and Aveiro, just to name a few.

Northern Portugal borders Galicia, the northwestern region of Spain. There are international airports in both Vigo and Santiago, which are closer to Penafiel than LIS.

Porto is the 2nd largest city in Portugal, rich in history and where you can easily spend several days. If you plan to stay in Porto before our wedding, it’s important to note the São João Festival starts the evening of June 23 and goes through the early morning hours of the 24th. This is a VERY big celebration in Porto each year and there will be thousands of people in the streets throughout the night. It should be a unique and fun experience if you want to pre-party before our wedding. Reserve your accommodations ASAP if you want to stay in Porto or the outskirts during this massive event! 

If this doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, you should avoid Porto June 23-24. Uber/Bolt from Porto to the wedding venue should range 45-50 Euros. 

Also note, on June 19th-21st, Porto will be hosting the Red Bull Air Race and they are expecting over a million spectators in town!
